Humic acids from an alpine-forest soil and from brown and weathered bituminous coals were methylated and oxidized with alkaline permanganate using two techniques The presence of from 25 to 60% of components that are non-volatile under conditions involving gas chromatography and that represent complex oligomeric decomposition products, was established from the methyl esters of the water-soluble acids obtained.Oxidation under drastic conditions, widely used in studying soil organic substances, was accompanied by predominant decomposition of the aliphatic and methoxyaromatic units in the structure of the initial acids. As a result, the differences in the composition of the oxidation products obtained from radically different natural sources were levelled off.The substances formed through permangenate oxidation of humic acids are essentially products of deep degradation of their macromolecules, not the “building blocks” present in the initial material. To identify the peculiarities of the structure of humic acids, the latter should successively be affected by oxidizers under conditions of increasingly drastic treatment. Various versions of this technique have successfully been developed in recent years by M. Schnitzer.
