This article focuses on the assignment of the zona pellucida 3 receptor (Zp3r) gene to mouse chromosome 1 EF by fluorescence in situ hybridization and confirmation by genetic mapping. The zona pellucida 3 receptor gene, Zp3r, encodes the sperm fertilization protein, Sp56, which has a specific affinity for the zona pellucida. Sp56, which is localized to the dorsal surface of the sperm belongs to a superfamily of protein receptors that have arisen by gene duplication, and are structurally similar. The protein is species-restricted and tissue-specific with postmeiotic expression.
