A total of 98 varieties consisting of 88japonicaand 10Tongil-typeof rice were analyzed to resistant genes and their effects to blast. The 13 major blast resistance (R) genes againstMagnaporthe oryzaewere screened in a number of Korean rice varieties using molecular markers. Twenty-eight (28.6%) were found to contain thePiagene originating from Japanesejaponicarice genotypes. ThePibgene from BL1 and BL7 was incorporated into 39 Koreanjaponicavarieties, whereas this same gene from the IRRI-bredindicavarieties was detected in allTongil-typevariety. ThePiigene was found in 17 of thejaponicavarieties. ThePiigene in Korean rice varieties originates from the Koreanjaponicavariety Nongbaeg, and Japanesejaponicavarieties Hitomebore, Inabawase, and Todorokiwase. ThePi5gene, which clusters withPiion chromosome 9, was identified only in anTongil-type, Taebaeg. Thirty-four varieties were found to contain alleles of the resistance genePitaorPia-2. ThePitagene injaponicavarieties was inherited from the Japanesejaponicagenotype Shimokita, and thePita-2gene was from Fuji280 and Sadominori. Seventeenjaponicaand oneTongil-typevarieties contained thePizgene, which in thejaponicavarieties originates from Fukuhikari and 54BC-68. ThePiz-tgene contained in threeTongil-typevarieties was derived from IRRI-bredindicarice varieties. ThePi9(t)gene locus that is present in KoreanjaponicaandTongil-typevarieties was not inherited from the originalPi9gene from wild riceOryza minuta. ThePik-multiple allele genesPik,Pik-m, andPik-pwere identified in 24 of the varieties tested. ThePitgene inherited from theindicarice K59 was not found in any of the Korean rice varieties tested. In haplotype analysis for the loci related to two QTLs as well as five major resistant genes and, twogenesPizandPitashowed stable resistant effects to blast nurseries and isolates in~Korea.
