In as active and rapidly advancing a field as the epidemiology of multiple sclerosis (MS), it would be foolish to attempt a comprehensive review even of recent work in a paper of this length. The aim will therefore be to sketch an outline of the main features of the pattern of distribution of the disease and to select one or two of the more controversial areas to be dealt with in greater detail. For a comprehensive catalogue of work on the geography of MS, readers are referred to a recent paper by Kurtzke (1975). General reviews of the epidemiology of MS have been published by Kurland et al.(1973) and by Lcibowitz & Alter (1973).Epidemiological techniques have been used in the study of MS in two main ways. Following the stimulus of the original geographical studies by Limburg (1950) in the USA a series of measurements of the prevalence, incidence and mortality of the disease are gradually describing the topography of MS throughout the world.
