Action potentials and histological prepns. were taken from regenerating peroneal, tibial, and saphenous nerves at various intervals up to 466 days following primary suture. At 17 days, small action potentials conducting at less than 1 mps were elicited in the distal stump by high threshold electrical stimuli. When the impulses were traced into the central stump by progressively shifting the electrodes, the maximum conduction velocities increased abruptly with a corresponding decrease in threshold. Distally, both the maximum conduction velocity and the maximum fiber diam. increased slowly with the time of regeneration so that the return was incomplete even at 466 days. The relationship between maximum conduction velocity and maximum fiber diam. of regenerating nerves was approx. linear.
