There has been a recent resurgence of interest in developmental psychology, and growing effort in the neurosciences, to better understand the environmental and neurobiological determinants of prosocial development. These fields are working to address such questions as the following: Are there family contexts that provide optimal conditions for nurturing kindness toward others? Are there neurobiological characteristics that differentiate more from less prosocial children? Or, does the interplay between environmental and neurobiological factors jointly contribute to prosocial development over and above the independent contributions of these factors, in accord with biopsychosocial models? This chapter explores these questions in an effort to outline our perspective on the familial and neurobiological origins of individual differences in prosocial development, with particular attention to our work on polyvagal theory and parasympathetic regulation. We then present new data analyses testing a biopsychosocial model of children's altruism.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved)
