4 Official census data and vital statistics used in this study refer to all Maoris of half or more Maori blood and, since 1956, all mixtures of Maoris with other Polynesians. However, the definition of a Maori as used with reference to the sample surveys, particularly Table II, plus the population surveys at Otematata and Nelson, is much more flexible and unavoidably includes a few Maoris of less than half Maori blood in addition to a small number of full-blood Polynesians other than Maoris.
