Although the perinatal field leads the pack in the organization of randomized control trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses into clinically useful printed and electronic texts,'gastroenterologists probably lead in sheer numbers of RCTs that should have an important impact on the care of patients. The problem is that no one has yet organized the latter into a format that could change medical practice on a continuing basis. It is certainly hoped that the Cochrane Collaboration will successfully compile all of the important RCTs in the field of gastroenterology into clinically useful and updated meta-analyses. Two and a half years ago one of us (TCC) tried to persuade the authors of the most popular textbook of gastroenterology2 to convert to the meta-analytic format of Effective Care in Pregnancy and Childbirth,) but failed. Apparently the effort was ahead of its time. The conference for which this manuscript was prepared4 should go a long way towards bringing all specialties in medicine into the modern world of information synthesis and transmission to the practicing doctor for the benefit of the patients.
