In his work [14] I, G. Shimura raised a question of the existence of a canonical system for a redueti~ e Q-group. Our purpose in this paper is to construct a canonical system for a reduetive Q-group which is obtained from a simple algebra over Q with a positive involution of the second kind.To be more specific, let B be such a simple algebra over Q, and take an involution 3 of B which coincides with the positive one on the center of B.
