Stainless steels suffer from pitting corrosion in chloride-containing environments. In our previous studies through the in situ optical microscopic observations, 1,2 it was demonstrated that pits were initiated at the boundaries between the MnS inclusions and the steel matrix in NaCl solutions. In addition to this, the most significant phenomenon which precedes pitting is the trench formation, which was introduced by selective dissolution at the boundaries. In addressing the pit initiation mechanisms, it is important to analyze the selective dissolution at the boundaries.
