Analyzed transcripts of 60-min tape-recorded interactions between 2 male and 1 female 2-yr-old Japanese children and their mothers. Both male children used male particles much more frequently than their mothers, while the female used slightly more female particles than her mother. Ss demonstrated sensitivity to the gender differences encoded in these particles and, more generally, to social information. Findings demonstrate that children are socialized through language, learning sex roles through social interactions and the language used in them.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved)
