The Society for the Neural Control of Movement arrived for the first time in Asia for their 45 29th annual meeting in Toyama, Japan (from April 22-29th, 2019). The meeting attracted over 46 325 attendees with a broad range of expertise and interests. Two focused pre-meetings on the 47 neurophysiology of Eye and Hand motor control took place in Kyoto and Tokyo, Japan, 48 respectively. These small format meetings fostered interactions and in-depth discussions. In 49 addition, a satellite meeting focused on “predictive coding and active inference to know and 50 explore the world” took place before the annual meeting. The main meeting’s topics ranged 51 from neurophysiology (single and multi-unit neural recordings, calcium imaging, fMRI) to 52 computation (deep learning, computational modeling of neural circuits and behavior, and 53 muscle modeling) and behavioral implications for movement control and learning. 54 Altogether, the presented work covered a broad range of motor research across different 55 model systems—from primate physiology, human psychophysics, and mouse motor skills, 56 to theoretical models of fruit fly biomechanics. 57 58As has been done in previous years (Gallego et al. 2017a; Mazurek et al. 2018), here we 59 present a brief summary of the highlights of the meeting. We categorized these highlights 60 into four main themes: 1) Circuits of sensory and motor control, 2) Computational tools and 61 models for motor neuroscience, 3) The relationship between muscle properties and motor 62 control, and 4) Naturalistic and complex behavioral tasks. 63 64
