The precise organization of motor corticostriate projections in rats was determined by light microscopy and EM. The motor cortex (head, forelimb, trunk and hind limb regions) was either surgically ablated or injected with [3H]leucine. Terminal fields in the striatum were described and regions with the densest terminal degeneration or axonal labeling were cored and processed for EM. Projections from the motor region end mainly in the dorsolateral striatum, rostral to the anterior commissure and lateral to the pallidum. Axons from the motor cortex synapse exclusively on dendritic spines of small dendrites in these regions.
