In cotton rats infected withLitomosoides carinii, the turnover of microfilariae is more or less equal in normal rats and in rats which have been immunized by the subcutaneous inoculation of embryonic microfilariae. (The daily turnover is probably more than 2X106in a rat with a stable micro-filaraemia.) In normal cotton rats the microfilariae seem to be eliminated in the pleural cavity (32%), lungs (39%) and liver, spleen and kidneys (29%). In immunized rats, however, nearly all the microfilariae are eliminated before they reach the blood so that patency is prevented; this elimination seems to take place in the pleural cavity (97%) and in the lungs (3%).F.
