specialists and novices alike. It serves not just as an immense repository (to inform authors of data and connections they may have overlooked), but also as a feedback loop (to motivate and drive research into previously unimagined lines of thought). It is now maintained by the OEIS Foundation—after many years of largely unassisted work by its indefatigable creator Neil JA Sloane—and supported by efforts of uncountably many volunteers.Much has already been written about the OEIS. Since this issue of the Intelligencer is devoted to John Conway, it seemed appropriate to ask Neil whether John possessed some favorite sequences that might, in turn, give rise to interesting stories. John and Neil coauthored the landmark book Sphere Packings, Lattices and Groups [1], as well as over 50 joint papers in the span from 1968 to 2007. They certainly knew each other well. Neil’s response was so generous and helpful that it forms the backbone of my review. It is fitting that just as the OEIS is a mosaic of contributions by many people, this brief article should have more than one voice. So let me now quote Neil:
