Aging occurs in context. Addressing the role of context for the course and direction of aging processes has become an essential element of lifecourse or lifespan perspectives in social and behavioral gerontology over the past five decades of research (e.g., P. B. Baltes, 1987; Carp, 1967; Dannefer, 1992; Kleemeier, 1959; Lawton, 1976, 1985; Rebok & Hoyer, 1977). When the process and outcome of aging is the target of analysis, such reference to resources (or constraints) in the person and her or his environment has even reached the status of a research paradigm in social and behavioral gerontology. However, it often remains unspoken what constitutes the context. One might even call it a “writing habit” to imply both social and physical environmental characteristics when addressing the context of aging. Furthermore, the “language game” (to use Wittgenstein’s term) of referring to both the social and the physical context in order to describe and explain aging is very common in gerontology and lifespan literature. Normally, what is meant when scholars use such a language game is taken for granted. However, writing habits and the playing out of language games tend, over time, to pretend the existence of a proven knowledge, which no longer appears to deserve exact spelling out. This chapter starts with the assumption that the rationale behind referring simultaneously to the social and physical environment still is in need of such spelling out. Perhaps there were even good reasons why this was
