Pattern formation in a system of reaction-diffusion equations which exhibit both lateral inhibition and excitability is investigated. The system studied is derived from the FitzHugh–Nagumo nerve conduction model. The existence of solitary and periodic stationary wave solutions is proved. Numerical computations show that some of these waves are stable as solutions of the partial differential equations. Further, arguments are given which indicate that these patterns arise as a result of excitability of the system and not as a result of a Turing mechanism.
