Using Van Loon''s amyloclastic method, amylase concentrations in the sera and various other tissues of the rat, mouse, dog, guinea pig and chicken were determined. Similar measurements in pancreatectomized-salivarectomized rats showed that such surgery did not result in lowered amylase concentrations. Calculations indicate that some of the amylase in the livers of these animals is intracellular. Tissue and serum amylase activities are essentially the same in pH 7.0 phosphate and pH 7.6 Veronal buffers, except for muscle and pancreas. No detectable amylase was added to the blood in passage through the lungs in the dog.
