Automobile original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will be driven by corporate average fuel efficiency (CAFE) and CO2 emission standards to fully examine the physics of fuel economy, but this article tackles the question of whether that will steer them toward extensive use of carbon fiber composites. There are approximately 100 vehicle models manufactured around the world that feature at least some standard equipment made from carbon composites. Many are luxury vehicles, and together they consume an estimated 11 million lb of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP). A recently introduced electric commuter car by BMW has a carbon composite passenger safety cell which weighs a mere 310 lb; its production is expected to consume more than 9.6 million lb of finished CFRP structure each year. This article takes a look at what it would take, in terms of how many similar programs to the BMW low-volume program, to create a revolution in the advanced composites industry, or further - whether the automobile industry has reached this tipping point.
