Masters games have emerged as significant sporting events capable of attracting large numbers of competitors from many parts of the globe. Like other sporting events, they exist at varying levels of scale and importance, from being primarily regional to international. This chapter looks at such events from the viewpoint of analysing the motives of competitors, and offers a conceptualization derived from three theoretical stances as advanced by Trauer and Ryan (2004) in the context of adventure tourism. It also briefly considers some of the management implications of such a motivational conceptualization. It is argued that these issues are applicable regardless of location of the games, and indeed the internationalization of the Masters games movement makes the analysis applicable to many destinations.
