Comments on an article by Scott H. Nelson (see record 2013-41574-020). Dr. Nelson challenged the relevance of" studies that show that the utilization of mental health services under current insurance plans is relatively low, and therefore the cost of mental health services in comparison with other medical conditions is reasonable." In the several meetings held by this Commission, many areas noted by Dr. Nelson were identified and earmarked for further study. Despite vigorous attempts, it was not possible to obtain funding for the Commission to continue its work. In his statement of issues, Dr. Nelson does touch on several important areas worthy of consideration. In his section on" Functional Job Analysis," Dr. Nelson spoke to the necessity for including a broad range of mental health professionals. The commentator supports this concept but concerned that in his simplistic recommendations Dr. Nelson failed to acknowledge the serious obstacles that must be overcome. Despite of few disagreements and criticisms of Dr. Nelson's paper, the commentator must commend Nelson's sincere attempt to find solutions to the serious problems confronting the health care system today.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)
