The rate of urea synthesis and the activity of ornithine-urea cycle enzymes were similar in unfed and estivating African lungfish [Protopterus aethiopicus]. In Xenopus laevis, car-bamyl phosphate synthetase activity decreased following starvation when the rate of urea biosynthesis decreases, and increased during maintenance in 0.9% saline or moist peat when urea biosynthesis increases. The activity of ornithine-urea cycle enzymes may be indicative of the rate of urogenesis.
