Spatial and density distributions, mode of occurrence and size-frequency histograms in living populations and death assemblages were analyzed quantitatively for four infaunal bivalve species on the intertidal flat of the coastal area of northwestern Shikoku, Japan. The results show that the mode of preservation of empty shells in the early process of fossilization differs greatly from species to species and/or area to area. The degree of taphonomic loss is low in deep burrowing species inhabiting muddy substrates, and the spatial and density distributions and size-frequency data of living populations are well preserved in the articulated empty shell assemblages. In contrast, dispersion of empty shells outside the habitat occurs frequently in the shallow infauna within coarser substrates. This work suggests that articulated fossil shell assemblages of deep burrowing bivalves are probably autochtonous at the population level, and that they may be most useful for detailed palaeoecological and palaeoenvironmental analyses.
