Defining swallowing as" to take through the mouth and esophagus into the stomachnl highlights the primary biological goal of the swallowing process, which is to transfer secretions and nutrition into the lower digestive tract. The four morphologic features serving this purpose are the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, and esophagus. Of these, the first three collectively are termed the upper aerodigestive tract because they also serve the airway-dependent functions of respiration and speech production, whereas the esophagus is anatomically and functionally independent of the airway. Thus, a basic understanding of the relationships of the anatomic components of this mechanism, as well as the complexities of the functional interactions among them, is essential to the understanding of normal and abnormal swallowing. Anatomic and physiologic development are characterized by age-related changes from infancy to adulthood. The focus of this article is on normal swallowing in a mature system and effects of aging on the system.
