LOW-BACK PAIN is either a complicated symptom or a symptom complex. Many of our classification problems stem from the fact that we tend to mix both structural and functional abnormalities, such as spondylolisthesis and postural strain, which may cause low-back pain, with the symptoms and syndromes themselves such as lumbago and sciatica in which an abnormality may be implied but not specified. The situation becomes even more complex if therapeutic expectations from, say, manipulation, traction, or surgery are included.
