Prior to the Pioneer 10 encounter a concerted theoretical effort was made to construct models of the Jovian Van Allen belt electron fluxes. For the most part, the physics underlying these models is similar to terrestrial radiation belt physics. Thus Jupiter provided an opportunity to test whether the physics of the Earth’s radiation belts is applicable to other planetary magnetospheres. Even if only partially successful, we can then contemplate exporting this physics to the unseen magnetospheres of planets orbiting other stars.
