Abstract Effects of the void content on the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastics (CFRP), including carbon-epoxy (C–E) and carbon-unsaturated polyester (C–P) composites, have been investigated. In order to obtain specimens containing a wide range of void contents, a small quantity of foaming agent was sprayed between each lamina prior to fabrication of the composites. A regression analysis of the relationship between ILSS and void content was performed for each sample. A void content criterion V cr which is required for quality evaluation of composites was calculated using the regression lines and the procedures of analysis of variance. The void content criteria were V cr= 0· 5% and V cr= 1% for C–E and C–P specimens, respectively. In order to find effects of voids on the mechanical reliability of CFRP, the probability of survival, Q v, was analysed using a statistical technique. It has been determined that the value of Q v decreases with increasing void content, and features of this reduction depend considerably on the working stress and the standard error between the regression line and the measured value of ILSS.
