Protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) constitute a diverse family of intracellular and transmembrane proteins. Expression data and recent genetic analyses indicate that many PTPs play important roles in different aspects of nervous system development. Although PTP mechanisms are still poorly understood, current data suggest considerable complexity in these signaling pathways. (C) Current Biology Ltd ISSN 0955-0674.
