The gut microbiota is a complex ecosystem of microorganisms present in the gastrointestinal tract. The composition and functioning of the intestinal microbiota are determined by multiple factors such as age, environmental factors such as diet, antibiotic use, stress, and to a lesser extent host genetics [1]. The host–microbiota interaction is crucial for normal host physiology, metabolism, and immunity [2]. Disruption of the balanced intestinal flora may impact local, but also remote organ systems. There is a growing body of evidence suggesting a complex, bidirectional communication between the gut microbiota and the central nervous system [3]. This two-way communication link has been named the gut–microbiota–brain axis. The connection between intestinal dysbiosis and a broad range of central nervous system (CNS) disorders such as Parkinson disease, autism spectrum disorder, multiple sclerosis, depression, and epilepsy is currently being studied intensively [4].
