The capillary components of the human myocardium are described. The capillary-types consist of the metarteriole in which the muscle sphincters, consisting of 1 to 3 fibers, are intermittently arranged along it length; the precapillary in which the muscle sphincters, consisting of 1 to 3 fibers, are located only at the junction where it branches from the arteriole or metarteriole; and the true capillary where the tube is strictly endothelial without muscles being present. The muscular components of the metarterioles and precapillaries are innervated by nerve fibers the terminal structures of which end as knotted fibrillar processes near the nucleus of the muscle. The sphincter capillary and its nerve constitutes a functional unit.
