Two-carboxy benzoylhydroxamic acids were synthesized in order to determine the effect of an-carboxy group on the course of the Lessen rearrangement. The products of the rearrangement included polypeptides, whether carried out in water, benzene or ethyl alcohol. The formation of these products is attributed to the intermediary transformation of the hydroxamic acids to azasuccinic anhydrides followedby the Leuchs polymerization. The polypeptides were hydrolyzed to the corresponding amino acids.
