Climate change due to increased atmospheric concentration of CO2, depletion of fossil fuel reserves and reduction in biowaste disposal to landfill are key drivers for the global focus on renewable energy from biomass. Targets of a 50% decrease in CO2 emissions by 2050, and increases in landfill taxes for waste disposal (in the UK this increased from£ 56 per tonne in 2012 to£ 86.10 per tonne in April 2017) 1 have been established and will accelerate the transition from fossil fuel to a renewable clean energy economy. Energy demand is increasing rapidly, in parallel to the world population (estimated to grow from 6 to 9 billion by 20502). The number of light-duty
