Various kinetic processes in micellar systems are discussed and related together. The time domain of these events varies from seconds for thermal reactions to <10/sup -14/ sec for photoionization processes. The kinetic processes described and discussed are: (1) the actual kinetic equilibria between monomer surfactant molecules and micelles; (2) the features that control the rates of entry and exit of probe molecules in micelles; (3) the movement of molecules in micelles; (4) the electron transfer between molecules solubilized at the micelle surface; and (5) the ejection of an electron from a probe molecule in the micelle into the aqueous phase. The discussion illustrates many of the interesting features of micelles whereby radiation induced reactions may be catalyzed or the reaction pathway directed. A brief description of similar events in reversed micelles concludes the discussion. In these systems particular attention is drawn to the unique features of the water bubbles and their ability to efficiently capture electrons from the bulk alkane phase. 13 figures, 3 tables.
