Solid state physics is an extremely broad area. The field abounds with fascinating physical effects, many of which have practical applications. The theoretical description of these effects can become very sophisticated, and in fact theoretical solid state physics is a very active research area. The book under review provides an introduction to theoretical solid state physics with a particular focus on many-body theory. Other modern research directions such as theoretical semiconductor physics or quantum optics are completely neglected. By concentrating on many-body effects, the author can treat the subject in greater detail than would be possible otherwise, and indeed after mastering this textbook, a graduate student working in this area should be able to understand a great deal of the current research literature and start with his thesis project. The book is very carefully written, typeset and illustrated. Every chapter starts with a motivation section that puts the material into a bigger context and ends with a summary section that repeats the major findings. Important equations are highlighted in boxes. At the end of each chapter, a couple of exercises help the reader to become more familiar with the matter, and a number of references guide the reader to the original research literature. I consider the author’s treatment of the material a complete didactic success. He puts lots of effort in making the complicated
