His closing line that ‘popular music appears to be headed back to the margins of cultural life, and that is a loss for us all’ (p. 213) seems pessimistic yet realistic considering his evidence. His focus on American and British stars reveals the domination of an anglophone culture that seems to be changing with the Internet-driven globalisation and digitisation of music. Two of Shumway’s 1960s rock star acts, The Rolling Stones and The Grateful Dead, feature in the highest grossing concert draws of 2015, their ‘aura’ still pulling fans. Whether more recent artists on the list such as Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift and One Direction can transcend celebrity status and become Shumway’s iconic rock stars is a matter of history and conjecture.
