This paper uses data from a survey of university graduates, conducted in eleven European countries and Japan, to analyse the relationship between higher education and graduates’ transition to work, comparing Japan with Germany and other European counties. Although data from all eleven European countries are used, the analysis is Particularly focused on comparison with Germany: German higher education has provided an influential model of the relationship between higher education and employment ever since the 19th century, and it offers illuminating contrasts with the Japanese system.
