It is shown that certain processes of random fragmentation called “uniform random fragmentation” lead to particle size distributions identical with the Weibull extremal probability distribution. The practical application of this result is illustrated on some examples involving experimental data about size histograms of lipid vesicles prepared by ultrasonic irradiation. The principal distinction of the present model from the model of random fragmentation leading to logarithmic-normal distribution is pointed out. Since within experimental uncertainty both distributions successfully simulate the vesicle size histograms, the specific mechanism of random fragmentation cannot be distinguished on the basis of the fit quality. On physical grounds, the Weibull distribution is preferable as, in contrast to the logarithmic-normal distribution, it correctly estimates the vesicle lower size limit.
