Felter and Dourson (1997) suggest that risk assessment is inherently imprecise or, as they call it, an ‘inexact science’. We would rather not defend the status of risk assessment as a science, although we agree that risk assessment could be considered to be scientific to the extent that it represents a recognizable discipline. We prefer to say, which we think amounts to the same thing, that uncertainty is an inherent component of risk assessment. Like Felter and Dourson (1997), we agree that this is an idea which deserves some more attention.
