Conducted several experiments to test the proposal that many of the behavioral deficits seen in schizophrenics can be accounted for by a primary attentional disorder and/or a general lack of interest by the patient in playing the psychological games of the investigator. Schizophrenics with good performance (Gs) on the Continuous Performance Test (CPT) were compared with those performing poorly (Ps) on it in studies of reaction time, CPT and EEG, slow-wave sleep, and environmental and familial predictors. Ss included a total of 123 chronic schizophrenics and 18 normal controls (Cs). Results are as follows:(a) The reaction time of the Ps was significantly slower than that of the Gs, who were significantly slower than the Cs.(b) Schizophrenics had significantly more beta-2 activity than did Cs.(c) Poor performance predicted the absence of slow-wave sleep.(d) 4 of the schizophrenics studied had a history of mental illness in the family, and medicated Ss had significantly more mental illness in the family than did unmedicated Ss.(22 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
