It has been hypothesised that there is a narrow range of supply between boron (B) deficiency and toxicity in plants. Two solution culture experiments were conducted to study the response of sunflower (Helianthus annuusL.) cv. Hysun 31 to potentially-deficient and potentially-toxic supplies of B. The concentration of B in the youngest mature leaf blade (YMB) of 46-day-old plants increased linearly up to a maximum of 1870 mg kg-1dry wt in response to increasing B supply. There was a five-fold increase in plant dry mass as B in the YMB increased from 22 to 290 mg kg-1dry wt. The critical concentration for B toxicity (90% of maximum yield) was determined as 1130 mg kg-1in the YMB. Dry matter yield declined by only 25% with 1870 mg B kg-1in the YMB. Results of this study indicated that there is not a narrow range of supply between B deficiency and toxicity in sunflower, and that this species is tolerant of high B concentration in leaf tissue.
