The subarachnoid distribution of material injected into the lumbar sac was determined by autoradiography and contrast radiography in monkeys and by 3-dimensional external scanning, autoradiography and histologic observation in human patients. The volume of injected solution is an important factor in attaining widespread distribution. When 10% of estimated cerebrospinal-fluid volume was injected significant concentration was achieved in the basal cisterns. When approximately 25% of estimated cerebrospinal fluid was injected in monkeys, distribution was obtained throughout the cerebral sub-arachnoid space and ventricular system.
