Two of the most exciting current approaches to water and cities are urban metabolism and water footprint analyses. Here I will limit my remarks to the former. For the first time in the existence of our species, the planet's urban population is bigger than its rural one, according to UN Population Bureau. In fact, practically all global population growth these days takes place in urban areas while rural population stays unchanged or even declines.
