AC loss measurement for Bi-2223 multifilamentary tapes wound into double pancake coils was carried out electrically in liquid nitrogen. The observed ac losses have strong frequency dependence, which indicates that hysteresis losses are not the main loss component. The loss in coils, which is transport current dependant, is from two to more than ten times larger than that expected from the short sample test.
