The La-Ni phase diagram was re-investigated over the composition range (50-83.3 at.% Ni). The major changes from the earlier published phase diagrams are: (1) the non-existence of the LaNi{sub 2} Laves phase as an equilibrium phase; (2) the existence of La{sub 0.875}Ni{sub 2} (LaNi{sub 2.286}), a pseudo-Laves-like phase; (3) the liquidus region between 58 and 70 at.% Ni; the {alpha}-{beta} transformation in La{sub 2}Ni{sub 7} at 976deg C (previously no transformation was reported); and (4) the peritectic melting temperature for LaNi{sub 3} at 811deg C (previously reported at 975deg C). Minor differences were found for several invariant temperature horizontals (eutectic and peritectic temperatures) and the compositions of the LaNi-'La{sub 2}Ni{sub 3}' eutectic and the so-called 'La{sub 2}Ni{sub 3}' phase. (orig.).
