Demonstrated the rationale for using the Multifamily Group Therapy (MFG) as a preventive and therapeutic intervention for medically ill children and their families. 164 families attended the MFG. Patients (aged 8+ yrs) and adult family members attended asthma education classes followed by a process oriented group. Subgroups based on the illness roles were formed, and common issues were discussed, followed by each family taking up an art project. Interfamilial interactions and alliances were encouraged. After a period of 6 mo, all Ss filled out an attitude questionnaire. Results show an attitude change in the Ss after the MFG. Families perceived people to be more helpful and placed more importance on the value of sharing feelings regarding the illness with other family members after the MFG than before. They revealed more about noncompliance or marital conflict during the MFG format than in individual sessions.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved)
