The reviewer read this third edition of Dr. Parikh's book with great interest and not a little fascination. Basically, this is a book designed for the Indian subcontinent where a working knowledge of snake-bite, and a similar knowledge of the various plant poisons used to kill cattle are a necessityfor the practicing Forensic Pathologist. Contrariwise, a detailed knowledge of Aspirin as a poison is an essential to such a practitioner in the Western world, whereas in India, where Aspirin poisoning "is generally accidental from idiosyncracy or overdosage and occasionally suicidal" it obviously is not. In spite of such differences there is a wealth of knowledge packed into this book, and certainly it would extend for many volumes in a Western work of similar aspiration. Much of the information is remarkable and the reviewer must ask forgiveness for wondering about its source, especially in view of the detailed description (with a diagram) of the umbrella gun that was used to kill Georgi Markov. This was information denied to all those involved in the case. Well-meant criticisms apart, this book-iswellworth reading and refreshingly different from the texts we are more accustomed to.
