A polypeptide fraction, mol.wt 4000–7000, isolated from human plasma, released the cell cycle block of serum-deprived or density-inhibited human glial cells. The factor responsible for this effect was not insulin. The same polypeptide fraction was previously shown to enhance sulphation and DNA synthesis of embryonic chick cartilage. Separation by isoelectric focusing implied that the factor responsible for the glial cell stimulation was not identical to that active in cartilage.
