Lateral plates of three-spined sticklebacks are modified scales that occur as single, bilateral rows. Throughout much of their northern Holarctic range, freshwater sticklebacks are trimorphic (complete, partial and low morphs) for the lateral plate morph phenotype. During development, the complete morph passes through stages that resemble the low morph and then the partial morph, before attaining the definitive complete morph condition. The relationship between the number of abdominal and caudal keel plates probably is similar in immature complete morphs and mature partial morphs. The complete morph is primitive to the partial and low morphs. A similar correlation exists between the number of abdominal and caudal keel plates in immature complete and adult partial morphs. The similarity of this correlation indicates that the partial morph represents an ontogenetic stage of the complete morph and evolved by paedomorphosis. There probably is geographical variation in the correlation between abdominal and caudal keel plate number. Paedomorphic lateral plate phenotypes evolved primarily by neoteny; progenesis may play a less important role. This paedomorphic model of lateral plate trimorphism is consistent with lateral plate morph genetics.
