Chromosomal polymorphism was studied in several natural populations of the ancestral Argentinian area of D. buzzatti. This polymorphism shows geographical differentiation, with some characteristic arrangements in several localities. Most of this polymorphism has been maintained in colonized populations of the Old World, but significant changes in frequencies have also been produced. Quantitative methods of ordination have shown that original and colonized populations are differentiated, especially by the presence of a much higher 4th chromosome polymorphism in the latter populations. This differentiation is explained by founder effects and probably by adaptation to new host plants already present in the Old World before colonization.
