Based on an X-ray petrofabric analysis of deformed rocks in the main structural belt in the east segment of the southern margin of the Altay Mountains, Xinjiang, the authors draw the following conclusions: (1) the rock deformation in the area is relatively strong; (2) quartz is mainly deformed along its basal or near-base glide system at medium and low temperatures and partly along its prismatic Ⅰ-type glide system at medium and high temperatures; (3) the ductile-brittle and ductile deformations of the rocks occur at medium-shallow and medium levels (at depths of 10-15 km, temperatures of 300-450℃ and pressures of 0.25-0.40 GPa); (4) the physico-chemical conditions of deformation in the Dalaweizi-Areletebie shear rheomorphic belt are similar to those in the Ku′erti-Mayin Obo ductile shear-compressive belt, and according to this fact, combined with regional geological analysis, it possible that these two belts together with the Sa’erbulake-Kekesayi brittle compressive cleavage belt form a complete plate (microblock) convergence deformation zone; and (5) the deformation conditions of the Xibodu (635 reservoir)-Fuyun crystalloblastic mylonite belt are notably different (e.g. its temperatures and pressures are higher than those of the above-mentioned two belts), which shows that the belt has a different geological evolution history; so it is possible that this belt might be a remnant fragment of a microblock with the pre-Sinian crystalline basement which was strongly reworked during the Paleozoic.
